The choice of paintwork for furniture

The paint is chosen depending on the desired effect and the condition of the wood. Matt and semi-matt paintwork masks roughness and unevenness well, dries quickly, but they show imprints. Glossy and semi-gloss paints do not hide the disadvantages of the base, create a beautiful mirror effect. Satin coating flickers, is not afraid of mechanical damage, less attracts dust. The degree of gloss, durability, are indicated on the label. Transparent coatings (varnishes, azure, wax) emphasize the natural structure of the tree.

Paints differ in type of foundation

4AlkydThey create a durable, wear-resistant film, resistant to moistureContain chemical components evaporating during application and drying.
5OilyForm a scratch-resistant waterproof layer. Do not even fade quickly in the sunStrong smell, long drying time
6ChalkyWell fit on the lacquered surface without sanding and primer, cover irregularities. From the first layer overlap the previous color, create a velvety surfaceTo preserve the brightness of the shade after drying, they need a finishing coating.

Required materials and tools

To remove the old layer you need a spatula or a cycle, a metal brush of medium hardness, an emery sponge or grinding equipment, a rag. Easily removed paint and varnish construction hair dryer. Masking tape is required to protect surfaces. Fittings, decorative elements are removed and screwed back with screwdrivers, a screwdriver.

For painting furniture you need to prepare:

  • small trays;
  • brushes with natural bristles for oil and alkyd formulations, from artificial fibers for acrylic or latex paint;
  • paint rollers for painting facades, table tops;
  • paint sprayer will reduce the time of work, will cause an even layer.

Acrylic paint is preferably applied with a paint brush. Elastic nylon pile leaves no residue, creates a uniform layer.

How to prepare furniture for painting

The cohesion of paint, the quality and appearance of furniture depends on the thoroughness of removing the old coating. On the basis should not remain fatty spots, dust, moisture. Before work, bedside tables, cabinets, chests are disassembled into individual elements so that in inaccessible places there are no unpainted areas left. Stained-glass windows, accessories that can not be removed, protect masking tape. The place where painting work will be carried out protects against contamination.

Removing the old paintwork surface

The most affordable treatment option is sanding. The grinder speeds up the process, but without experience, you can touch the veneer layer. Lacquer is removed with a metal scraper, brush, coarse sandpaper. To make the surface smooth, movements are made along the fibers. For preprocessing, paper of grit P40, 60 is needed; final grinding is done with grain P150, 180. Minor unevenness is removed with P120 abrasive. To ensure uniform contact of the paper with the treated surface, use sanding pads with clips. They can be replaced by a small block of polystyrene wood, on which the sanding skin is attached with nails. The surface is polished to an ideal state, cleared of dust.

During heat treatment, the lacquer and paint are softened with a building hairdryer, removed with a spatula, cleaned with abrasive material. Care must be taken not to blacken the wood. If the varnish is charred, but does not flake off, chemical means are needed.

For a tree special washes in the form of powder, gel, liquid are on sale. Before buying you need to examine the labels. There are universal washing means and special washes for certain types of paintwork materials. It is easier to work with jelly-like pastes, which are quickly absorbed, do not spread on the base. If the furniture has a thin thread, a liquid remover will do. The tool is applied with a brush, cover the furniture with plastic wrap for 3-4 hours. Lacquer layers are removed with a spatula along the fibers. The residual solvent is neutralized with water with vinegar in a ratio of 5 to 1 or white spirit. The remaining areas of lacquer can be treated again with a wash or removed with emery paper.

It is convenient to remove varnish from carved parts with a wire washcloth. Oak surface is recommended to handle nylon sponge.

Surface treatment

Cracks, pores, chips on furniture are filled with wood putty. Defects are carefully treated, cleaned after drying. Pressed places should be level with the rest of the surface. The leveling compound can be prepared independently from PVA glue and residues left after grinding. The consistency of putty is controlled by increasing or decreasing the amount of glue.

To prevent dust and dirt from reducing adhesion, the surface is degreased. The napkin is impregnated with special means or with acetone, white spirit, carefully wipe the base.

The primer promotes adhesion, strengthening of wood, uniform distribution of paint over the surface. Primer composition glues fibers, reduces the absorbent properties of wood-based materials. Experts recommend choosing a primer and paint with one type of binder component, but there are also universal compounds. The label indicates the properties and purpose of the coating. For example, acrylic primer is not suitable for pine, does not apply to oil paint. Resinous substances block alcoholic shellac, which is compatible with oil and water based paints. Old friable wood, porous materials are covered with deep penetration primer. It will strengthen the surface, prevent the formation of bubbles and stains.

Staining methods

Tinted done when they want to preserve the texture of wood. The result depends on the LKM used.

  • Wood stain gives to furniture from an array an expressive shade, does not form a film on a surface. The product is applied in 2-3 layers with a soft brush or roller with a short nap, foam rubber. Beginners easier to work with the oil composition. It does not lift the fiber, after drying it does not form stains.
  • Mord after application reacts with tannins, emphasizes the pattern, gives inexpensive breeds an interesting look. To protect against moisture, the array after etching is coated with varnish.
  • Toning dyes penetrate deep into the fibers, give a more saturated color than wood stain. Concentrates are sold in the form of liquid and powder, mixed with a solvent.

Solid staining is used for different materials, allows you to get furniture facades of bright colors, to create two-color coating. Thixotropic paint forms on the chipboard, MDF surface, similar to plastic. Furniture can be given an antique look, decorated with gold, painted.

Varnishing enhances shine and contrast, protects against moisture. Clear varnish emphasizes the beauty of precious woods. Color compositions give a saturated shade, renew pine, birch, linden. Craqural varnish creates an imitation of cracks.

Coloring furniture from different materials

Array, wood boards differ in structure, they need an individual approach to dyeing. Old children's plywood furniture, kitchen stools covered with acrylic paint, after drying and decorating treated with acrylic lacquer. Laminated and coated with a paper-resin film after sanding are primed with a polyurethane-based compound or automotive primer in a balloon. Then it is painted with velor roller with compositions on polyurethane and alkyd bases, with epoxy enamels. The old Romanian wall can be updated with chalk paint without removing the lacquered layer. The surface must be degreased, primed, level with a sanding sponge. If the base is slightly different from the tone of the paint, two layers are enough. For a fundamental change in shade will have to paint furniture 3-4 times. To preserve the velvety and color, the coating is treated with wax.

Painting furniture from chipboard

Chipboard is well painted with alkyd and acrylic enamels. After drying, a dense film with water-repellent properties is formed. The old layer of chipboard is removed difficult, it is desirable to use a gel remover. After cleaning, you need to create a rough surface with paper P150, 180. For reliability and economy of enamel, apply 2 layers of primer.

Master class coloring cabinet

You will need:

  • set of screwdrivers;
  • 3-4 sheets of fine sandpaper;
  • white spirit, rags;
  • brushes with artificial pile 2 pieces;
  • tray;
  • fur roller 3 pieces;
  • masking tape;
  • OTEX Akva Primer Can;
  • 2 cans of acrylic paint.

Doors should be removed from the hinges, lay on a table covered with a film or bed. The surface is sanded with light circular motions without removing the laminate layer, it is thoroughly degreased. The primer is applied with a roller, the ends are processed with a small brush. To obtain a uniform surface paint chipboard need in 2 layers. That they turned out thin, the roller is rolled away in a tray. To dry one layer takes an hour.

The paint dries quickly, but it is better to wait 2 days before the final assembly of the cabinet.

Painting furniture from MDF

Let out panels of four kinds.

FinishWhat paint is suitableHow to handle
1LaminatedPolyurethane and alkyd enamelsMelamine impregnation is removed large, then fine sandpaper without pressing hard, so as not to crush the plate
2VeneeredOil, alkyd paints, varnish, stainOld varnish is removed with a fine-grained P240 sandpaper very carefully, so as not to damage the pattern of the wood cut
3PaintedPolyurethane, oil, alkyd, acrylic enamelThe base is sanded and ground.
4Kashirovannye (facing paper-resin film)Alkyd, polyurethane paints, varnish on alcohol, oil-basedThe paper layer and glue are completely removed with an emery paper or iron through a cloth.

Painting furniture from natural wood

It is easier to work with natural wood, all types of cleaning, paint, furniture lacquer are suitable. Cracks and chips are often formed on the tree and need to be carefully processed. Defects are sanded so that there is no burrs, they ground, they putty. After applying the primer on the tree, the pile rises, which is sanded with P-320 sandpaper. The surface is cleaned with a rag moistened with a solvent, primed, painted or varnished. Well-preserved furniture can be painted with tinting varnishes, stain. Antique cabinets and nightstands of the boards are covered with opaque enamels. It is convenient to paint small objects with aerosols on an acrylic basis in barrels. Quick-drying nitro-enamels give a nice gloss, but are toxic, they are not suitable for working in an apartment.

Features repainting furniture in white

Dark wood is difficult to repaint in white or lighter shades. But the wood is well bleached with bleach. In 5 liters of water to dilute 1 kg of lime and 125 g of soda. The surface is treated with a roller or spray, after 5 minutes neutralized with vinegar. It is convenient to handle small items with a 30% hydrogen peroxide solution, and after bleaching, wipe with vinegar. For sale professional wood bleach with ethanol acid, lightening red and yellow surfaces, pollution, blueness. After bleaching the tone is leveled, a uniform coating is obtained.

For painting furniture under bleached oak, a thin layer of enamel is applied with a roller or spray gun. Parallel strokes are applied only in one direction on a dried base with a wide flat brush. After drying, grind, water-based varnish or wax.

Decorative painting of furniture

Traces of time give cupboards, dressers, table tops an antique look. Aged objects complement the interiors in the style of Provence, Fusion, Chebbi-chic. To imitate shabby wood, chipboard covered with chalky or matte paint, then in the corners, near the handles, with a fine emery paper make scuffing.

To create a buffet or chest of drawers in the style of Provence, certain places on the facade, corners, decor are painted with brown or blue enamel, after drying, rub with wax. The entire surface is painted 2-3 times with white enamel. Waxed fragments are rubbed with a knife or spatula.

To highlight the beautiful texture of wood, the facades are covered with two shades of wood stain. Light background create a composition on the water or alcohol, which penetrates deep into the fibers. Then put a dark stain on an oil basis, settling in the grooves.

Independently easy to achieve the effect of patina. The facade is painted with acrylic enamel, for aging in some places they are sanded with emery paper and polished with a rag. The second layer is painted with enamel of a different shade, and again treated with sandpaper. Cover the furniture with matte acrylic varnish.

With the help of plastic stencils, self-adhesive paper, lace napkins on the base color make drawings and ornaments. The stencil is fixed with adhesive tape so that the image is clear, the paint is sprayed with a spray gun.

Cabinet and children's furniture looks modern, painted with bright thixotropic paints in different colors. Masking tape will help create zigzags, geometric patterns.

Useful tips

A few recommendations will help to achieve an even layer and quickly paint large surfaces.
