But for restoration and decoration, you will need to select special materials and compositions separately.

Ways of restoration

To determine the best option for the restoration of the table will help familiarize with the modern methods of its repair, as well as obtained after processing the form. Cover products can be as follows:

  1. Using ordinary brushes (to create a perfectly smooth surface or create a smooth transition from one color to another by mixing colors right on the tabletop with a small brush).
  2. Through nets, tulle, stencils (for patterns and stylized spots on the surface).
  3. Craquelone compositions (allows for antique styling, to give the surface a look of cracked paint).

You can also glue the tables with different types of films, carry out pasting with paper materials. All of the options considered are more applicable to wooden furniture, but some of them are also suitable for the restoration of plastic products.

The main stages of the restoration of the wooden table

Restoration of a natural wood table requires a careful approach to each stage of restoration. Only in this way will it be possible to do the work with your own hands correctly and return the furniture to its original appearance (or even make it better). Direct restoration is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Selection of the necessary materials and tools (it will be much easier to work with everything ready than to buy the necessary materials during the restoration process).
  2. Primary repair of the whole structure (this stage concerns the restoration of the integrity of the product: for example, for the dining table, the work will be to repair the frame, for writing, to repair the frame, shelves, boxes).
  3. Removing old cover, restoring wood.
  4. Primary processing and decor of furniture.
  5. The final stage in the auxiliary protection of the created decor.

All the above steps will be appropriate for minor damage to the old tables. If large cracks appeared on the surface of the tabletop, or the edges of the array began to break off and crumble, the work will take much longer and may not bring the desired result.

Required materials and tools

To safely and correctly restore the old table, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  1. Protective equipment (goggles, mask, gloves).
  2. Sandpaper (small + coarse) or grinder (with abrasive and abrasive circles).
  3. Paint tools (brushes, rollers).
  4. Protective compounds for wood (high-quality impregnation to protect the tree from moisture, decay, pests, blue).
  5. Coloring and auxiliary compositions (selected paint for repainting wooden furniture or stain, primer, varnish).
  6. Fasteners and tools for the repair of the old table (screwdriver, screwdriver, screws and screws, liquid nails, furniture glue).

Finishing can be carried out not only varnish, but also wax. The advantage of this composition is the ease of recovery: a place with a scratch just needs to be reprocessed with wax.

Preliminary repair

Primary repair involves restoring the strength of the entire table structure. Therefore, you need to start recovery with the definition of problem areas. For example, a table with loosened legs should be removed, inspected attachment points (chipped along the thread are considered to be a frequent cause). If necessary, damaged areas need to glue furniture glue. If the problem is drying the glue, which were glued together separate parts (for example, in the area of dowels connecting the legs and the shelf of the coffee table), then you should remove the old glue and put the parts on the liquid nails. In the case of transforming dining tables, it may be necessary to restore the table height adjustment mechanism. Usually the problem with a bad move mechanism is solved by simple cleaning of parts and their lubrication.

Removing the old cover

When the primary repair was carried out, and the furniture was restored to its former strength and reliability, you can proceed to remove the old coating. Work can be done in several ways:

  • Mechanical.

In this case, the cleaning of old varnish and paint is carried out using an abrasive sandpaper or a sander. Initially, a rough cleaning is carried out: large or medium-grained sandpaper, peeling pieces of varnish and paint are cleaned. Then fine abrasive sandpaper is carried out more accurate removal of residues. The main thing is not to overdo the work and do not remove the top layer of wood.

  • Chemical.

There are special formulations designed to remove old varnish and paint from wood. They are applied with a brush to the furniture. Then after 20-30 minutes are removed with a brush (already together with the eroded old coating).

Remove dust from cleaned wood and treat it with antiseptic impregnation. Drying the impregnation is usually about 24 hours. Such work should be carried out both for furniture made of natural wood, and for products from chipboard, MDF.

Seal of cracks and chips

In order to qualitatively repair the table, and not just refresh it, you should take care of properly getting rid of chips and cracks. For work, you need a brush, wood putty (preferably as close as possible to the color of the wood), fine abrasive sandpaper. The following master class will help to carry out the work correctly:

  1. Remove dust from damaged areas (chips and cracks). If pre-treatment was carried out with an antiseptic, then this work can be avoided.
  2. Using a soft rubber spatula, "close" chipped and cracked putty on wood. It is necessary to invest the composition as deeply as possible in order to completely close the formed depressions.
  3. Carefully remove excess putty: level surface to be repaired.
  4. After drying, putty on the treated areas abrasive sandpaper.

Preparation for finishing: priming

Before decorating the restored table and decorating it, the surface should be primed. This requirement applies to the tabletop, and to the frame itself. It requires a shellac, acrylic or alkyd primer: they are suitable for wood coating. Direct priming is carried out as follows:

  1. A small amount of primer is applied to the surface of the table (the treatment is initially carried out in areas), distributed by a rubber spatula. It is advisable to distribute the composition as carefully as possible to get an even layer. After covering individual sections, all transitions need to be leveled so that there are no differences.
  2. After drying the first layer (usually it takes from 1 to 6 hours) apply the second layer and wait for it to dry.
  3. On top of the dried primer to carry out grinding to smooth the surface and eliminate any differences.

Ways to give the final decor

It is unusual to paint or decorate a table without the involvement of specialists - with your own hands. Such work can be done in different ways:

  • conventional staining;

Conducted using paint on wood and brush. The composition is evenly distributed over all surfaces.

  • coloring figured rollers;

For painting you will need paint on wood and a roller, on the surface of which there are three-dimensional patterns. The application of paint is carried out with one movement, then the roller is rearranged to its width.

  • decoupage;

A decoupage glue is applied to the surface of the table, the prepared paper elements are glued (solid sheets or cut out elements).

  • dyeing through tulle;

Ironed tulle is laid out on top of the prepared surface (simply primed or painted white). Spray paint is sprayed from above. The tulle is carefully removed to prevent the picture from smearing.

  • stencil staining;

A stencil is made of cardboard (or a ready-made one is bought). The stencil is applied to the table, and through the cut template the table top is painted. A popular option for highlighting the perimeter, corners, or center of the table.

  • multicolor coloring.

Several colors with similar colors are used (for example, from light to dark). Paints of different colors are applied in wide stripes. Then a brush between them gently made smooth transitions.

Finishing varnish or wax

Fix the result of decoration and additionally protect the table from damage, moisture will help its finishing - varnish or wax. Modern varnishes have a fairly good wear resistance, can be used for coffee tables (which are rarely used), and for kitchen tables (operated daily). Wax provides the most reliable protection, therefore, more used for processing tables in the kitchen. Paint is applied with a brush in 1 layer. The period of drying of the composition depends on its characteristics and features (it may take 18-36 hours to complete drying). The wax paste is applied with a tampon or thick brush. Liquid wax is distributed by brush over the entire surface of the table (tabletop, legs). Solid wax is melted before application, then distributed with a brush (“rubbed” into the surface). But keep in mind that solid wax may include chemical additives.

What material pasted

If the painting of the table after the restoration is not suitable, you should pay attention to the modern ways of pasting furniture. These include:

  • Pasting film.

The film is peeled off the paper base and applied (glued to the table). It is necessary to gradually separate the film and additionally iron its glued parts (for example, with a rubber spatula) to remove bubbles. On the edge of the tabletop, you can additionally blow the film with a hairdryer for better fixation and also iron it.

  • Decor tabletop scotch.

Decorative tape of different colors can be pasted on the tabletop with strips, form squares. On top, you can additionally glue a transparent film (for example, above) for reliable protection of adhesive tape from damage and peeling.

  • Pasting the table top stickers.

Ordinary stickers in the form of patterns, animals, flowers or products are perfect for table decor. They should be glued to the previously degreased surface of the tabletop. Additional protection stickers are not needed: they are pretty good hold, and if necessary, can be easily removed.

Ways to restore the glass table

Glass table, even with very careful operation can be covered with scratches, "scuffs". Especially if it is included in the lunch group and is used daily. With its own power, with a slight damage to the table top, it is possible to restore the glass surface using such compounds:

  • colorless (clear) lacquer: due to penetration into cracks it evens the surface a little, but is a temporary solution and requires very careful application;
  • GOI paste: allows you to get rid of minor scratches, heats up before use according to the instructions on the packaging and then is rubbed into damaged areas with neat circular movements;
  • soda: diluted to a mushy state and in a similar way, like GOI paste, rubbed into damaged parts;
  • Toothpaste (not gel): with its help the table top is polished, due to which the glass returns shine, and the micro-scratches and scuffs disappear.

In the presence of large chips and cracks, it is recommended to completely replace the tabletop by yourself or hand it over to a specialist for repair. The peeled off frame is easily restored by carefully removing the dried glue and applying a new adhesive composition. Screwed screws should be replaced with new ones if the tabletop is screwed to the frame.
