DIY Witch Hat

What kind of Halloween masquerade does without the charming witch? And what a sorceress without a symbolic outfit: a pointed hat, a broom under his arm and a strict fitting dress to the floor? Witches have long been habitues of Halloween parties. The image of an evil sorceress is really many-sided: it can be a gray-haired old woman with a hooked nose, a charming young sorceress with a fervent look and even a very little naughty girl. There are dangerous, dark, mysterious, fabulous, charming and cute witch. You can correct the image with the help of makeup and details of the dress, but one thing remains unchanged - a branded hat with a sharp tip that seems to rip the sky over the head of a dark sorceress. Attribute image can be purchased at the store ready goods, but much more fun to make a hat with your own hands. For elegant witches - femme fatal beauties who have switched to the dark side, they select luxurious clothes from black velvet or silk, corsets, stylish decorations and neat Halloween hats that crown elegant hairstyles. For the image of an old sorceress, an awkwardly large head-dress on disheveled hair, slightly undermined by the time of dress, “terrible” makeup (teeth, long noses, warts) will suit. Little enchantors are picked up by "dolls" outfits that are made by mothers at home: neat, short dresses are combined with funny striped sleeves and stockings. Let us consider in stages the processes of creating three types of witch hats: from felt, from fabric and from paper.

Witches' image and history of the appearance of pointed hats

The evolution of the image of the sorceress is closely connected with the history of religious fundamentalism. If initially the witches were not so categorical, then in the era of the "witch hunt", any woman could become a potential "unclean friend." All that was enough was a pair of slanders from "well-wishers" and several hours of torture so that the unfortunate would confess to all sins. It was believed that the witches met with the devil himself, kill children, in every possible way spoil people and occasionally flock to the Sabbaths in order to boast of atrocities and celebrate their impunity. Pointed hats are an obligatory attribute of a witch only in Western culture. Patriotic Baba Yaga preferred headscarves or headbands. Bulgakov's Margarita flaunted nudity altogether. Pointed hats were popular in different cultures. And they didn’t carry any negative coloring in themselves. First, elongated headdresses appeared in ancient Egypt. They were called atevs and, along with klafta (striped scarf), were considered part of the ritual image of the pharaoh. In Europe, peaked hats were worn everywhere by men. Women preferred enneny - heavy "caps" with a whalebone frame, wrapped in silk and decorated with a veil. There were no fields in such "hats". Hats and without that were weighty and brought the owner a lot of trouble during walks.

In the Middle Ages, witches appeared to people in the nude and with flowing hair. And usually sorcerers had a lush red hair. A little later, the witches became more modest and began to mask themselves more carefully. Their clothes did not differ from the appearance of an ordinary city woman: a dress and a cap. Only in the XVII century in the English books and engravings witch got pointy hats. Many researchers believe that it was with the help of an awkwardly sharp tip that it was easy to hint at the connection of the owner of the headdress with evil forces. The image that is called "hit the mark". He began to be used everywhere (in fairy tales and songs) and now, after a couple of centuries, no self-respecting witch appeared on the sabbath without this element of clothing. Finally, the image of the sorceress in the peaked hat entrenched after the release of Frank Baum's book The Amazing Wizard of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the West had an unhealthy greenish tint to his face, was dressed in black clothes and a hat of the same color, whose tip in sharpness could argue with the spire of the tallest tower. This look has become a classic. It is complemented by a stylish broom, perhaps a skull in hand and a faithful companion - a wolf, a raven, a bat or a black dog. It would seem that the enchantress should look caricatured and absurd in this outfit, but the gloomy image of a woman who adds to the look of the “you” with otherworldly forces. Pointed hats are actively used during Halloween. They can be called a classic attribute of a witch's costume. Hats are often supplied with weighty buckles, like on belts. This is a Dutch tradition that gradually merged with the English image of the witch and into the symbolism of the Quakers. The combination really turned out to be amazing, because some are representatives of a religious organization, while others are the evil that they fight.

Borderless pointed hats were part of the astronomers (astronomers). It was believed that the space under the hood symbolizes the "temple". The astrologer could be anywhere, but at the same time he was constantly "in the cathedral", that is, kept in touch with the heavens.

Making a paper / cardboard hat

Witch hat is the easiest way to make cardboard or paper. Materials are available to everyone. Depending on the size of the finished product, it can be used for different purposes. For example, tiny hats are used to decorate the table for Halloween. Larger hats are suitable for decorating a child’s costume. It should be borne in mind that such a hat will quickly become unusable due to the fragility of the material. Usually it is used only once, and the next year will have to make a new one.

Necessary tools and materials

To work will require:

  • Scissors;
  • Pencil;
  • Cardboard or paper;
  • Ruler and compass;
  • Paint and brush.

Additionally, for decorating hats, satin ribbons, bows, beads, coins, brooches, veils, locks, feathers, and buttons are used. As an ornament, you can take any vending detail that will make the witch's hat more original. Instead of a sheet of cardboard, disposable plates are sometimes used for the fields.

Making crown and field hat

First, make a pointed crown. It is folded from a pre-prepared pattern. The cone turns out same, as paper bags for sunflower seeds. On the scheme, specially made stock, which will be glued. The "bezel", that is, the future fields of the hat consist of circles. They draw three: the boundaries of the fields and another internal. It will be cut into strips, bent and glued to the crown. In another embodiment, stocks are made on the cap and also glued to the "wrong" side of the hat fields. Then the paper is painted, thereby masking the junction of the two parts.

Hat decoration and dyeing

To avoid the subsequent coloring, the hat is made of the "elegant" cardboard decorated with drawing. Beautifully look models with black borders and a patterned crown. If plain paper was used, it is painted in gouache with a brush. Do not recommend the use of watercolor paints. Due to the liquid consistency during drying, the composition will cause the paper to deform and the cap will “crumble”. On top of the still wet paint is covered with glitter.

To secure the layer, it is sprayed with ordinary hairspray. It will additionally give a glossy shine. You can do drawing and put on the surface of the product the original pattern. For decoration headdress fit any trinkets. The more original the hat will look, the more attention its owner will attract. It is pasted over with organza, veil, lace "rims", feathers, bows, sequins and even fur. Steampunk hats decorated with locks from old clothes and gears from watches look luxurious.

Homemade kids Halloween hats with a repeating pattern of spiders or bats will look cute and unusual. A large mother's brooch in a silver frame will complete the image of the naughty little witch.

Felt hat

Felt - an ideal material for complex crafts, which should keep the form. This is a soft, dense natural fabric (felt), obtained by felting. Berets, hats, and even felt boots are made from it. For home experiments with Halloween outfits suitable for creativity, which can be bought in the store. The package usually includes multi-colored pieces of felt, but you can choose the right shades yourself. Black, red, orange (yellow) and lilac or blue colors are perfect for the image of a witch.

Required materials and tools

To work with the material will need:

  • Scissors;
  • Needle and thread;
  • Compass, pencil, paper sheet (for the pattern);
  • Glue;
  • Several pieces of felt in different shades.

For decoration choose beads, rhinestones, satin bows and felt bats, which are put on the field of the hat.

Operating procedure

A hat made of felt is created according to the same algorithm as the paper model, but here it is necessary not to glue the elements together, but to sew them together. First you need to draw a pattern for the fields and the crown. Be sure to add "stocks". It is recommended to draw on a piece of paper, after which the pattern is cut and applied to pieces of felt. It can be fastened with pins. Then, with a piece of chalk or remnant, the pattern is redrawn onto the fabric, and cut out along the contours. Now you can start sewing. First, join the edges of the crown, and then sew two hat parts into one piece.

It is worth noting that hats of felt, as well as of foamiran, are usually made of small sizes. They are more suitable for children, dolls and Halloween pumpkins. Often used as a room decor. A large headdress will not keep its shape, it will also have to make a frame for it.

Decor

Decorative headdress adorned with fun tassels on the tips and "belt" with a buckle to match. Details can be created from the same felt or use more airy fabrics (mesh, veil). To the fields attach "fluffy" edging of fur or black feathers. The junction of the crown and the fields are decorated with bows, imitation of cobwebs, miniature skulls, spiders in sequins, silk ribbons. Hats with an "autumn" decor made of maple leaves, grass, spikelets, tiny pumpkins (from Christmas balls) and scarlet rowan tassels will look unusual.

Cloth hat

Fabric hats - the most popular option. They are made for adult Halloween witches from any textile. Since the size of the product is quite large, the prerequisite for it are frameworks that help maintain the shape of the headdress. Some combine materials. For example, a fabric crown and cardboard fields. A hat made of textiles will last a long time and will be used on many Halloween, while retaining its awesome look.

Required materials and tools

To work on the creation of textile cap will need:

  • Scissors;
  • Thread and needle;
  • The cloth;
  • Wire for the frame;
  • Nippers;
  • Sheet of cardboard for the pattern;
  • The decor.

Witch's headgear may have a sharp tip, aimed at the sky, or gently sliding somewhere to the side. Fabric for fields and crown will starch.

Technique of work

To begin to measure the circumference of the head of the witch, which is intended hat. On the basis of the figure, they create a pattern on a sheet of cardboard with reserves of 1.5 cm. Then frame “circles” are made. Two pieces of wire are cut from the coil. One is equal to the girth of the head, and the second - the length of the outer fields of the hat. The ends of both pieces are connected, tightly twisting. You can use a soldering iron. Now sew the crown, and attach a smaller wire circle to the bottom. If the cap should gently "subside", then its figure is straightened and in the right places consolidate the folds formed stitches. For the fields of the hat cut out two identical parts. They are applied to each other and stitched. Now the fields can be turned on the front side. On the rim fix the wire circle of larger diameter. Carefully sew the remaining stitch outside. If there is no wire at hand, it is replaced with a cardboard circle. Form it will keep a little worse. Then the fields are stitched with a crown. The place of the fastening of the two elements is masked with a black or purple ribbon.

Decor

Pointed witch hat made of fabric is decorated with a translucent mesh. Veil sewn to the fields "from the inside." A large "dome", which will hang from all sides of the headdress, is assembled under a black inconspicuous elastic band and is put on from above. Hats are decorated with bright lacing, bats, snakes, buckles, feathers, spiders, picture-sliding on a thread with a sharp tip. Looks great models made of black silk and decorated with bright orange "bouquets" of maple leaves. Modest, but mysterious caps decorated with silver threads, enmeshed cap. Complement the decor with tiny rhinestones or asterisks. To emphasize the dark style, use the skull, "claws" of small animals, miniature ravens, which are hoisted on the headgear fields. The original decor can be crocheted. For example, a light cap made of gray yarn (lace knitting) will mimic the webs on a black hat.

Witch Cocktail Hat

Cocktail hat - a small elegant headdress. It is usually attached with pins on its side. Such a hat is part of the image of an elegant witch who only hints at her belonging to dark forces. The outfit is a little reminiscent of caricature masquerade clothing. A sophisticated dress, a corset embroidered with black lace and a tiny hat with a coquettish veil - this is the image of a modern witch. You can make such a headdress from a fabric with a cardboard frame. Black silk crowns are covered with lace and decorated with large beads. At the junction of the fields and the cap they fix a satin ribbon, which is crowned like a cherry on a cake with an elegant brooch instead of coarse decorative buckles.

Conclusion

A witch is always welcome at a Halloween party. The image of the sorceress, one of the brightest representatives of the "evil spirit", will have to be assembled piece by piece, carefully considering every detail of the fancy dress. The hat is perhaps the main symbol of witch life along with a broom. She will be the "identification mark", which will immediately make it clear to other guests what image the woman has chosen for herself.
