Modern Kitchen: Design Examples

Modern is sometimes called "modern classics". Style really is a low-key blend of lightweight luxury elements and minimalist ideas that have been so popular lately. We can say that modern appeared on the ruins of the classics. At the beginning of the last century, the Old World covers a wave of popularization of history. This direction is characterized by accurate copying of interiors that were fashionable in the distant past. In fact, this is a kind of "great-grandfather" of vintage and retro. There were also original versions of eclectic intermixing of interiors, but the design required a breath of fresh air. In contrast to historicism, modernity emerged, as something conceptually new, unusual. The direction was created on foggy Albion. It was the old England who gave us poets, writers, designers, illustrators and architects who became the fathers of modernity. A powerful impetus to its emergence was the tradition of holding exhibitions, where the most modern inventions were demonstrated, which were later introduced into the interiors. Kitchen design in the modern style is suitable for calm, restrained people who are not alien to using the new, but at the same time they are partly constrained by internal conservatism. In the article we will talk about how to properly furnish this room and what tricks hides the "modern classic".

Distinctive features of style

Modern from other styles is distinguished by a number of features that allow you to create a unique interior composition. The main features of the direction include:

  • The combination of angularity with smooth lines and rounded corners, on which the geometric contrast of the interior is based.
  • The minimum amount of textiles.
  • The abundance of modern technology, which neatly fits in a strict "frame". Modern has become the predecessor of constructivism, in turn, which gave rise to ultramodern high-tech. Here is the similarity of these three styles.
  • Only light decor. In this respect, modern is very similar to the concept of minimalism.
  • An original and bold combination of shades on a pastel background of wall decorations.
  • An abundance of glossy, shiny surfaces that flow into each other. Here is the birth of futurism.
  • Functionality and conciseness.

Also, modern space is characterized by large spaces that let air into the room. In general, the interiors look stylish, elegant, but slightly alienated and restrained. Modern is ideal for a person who is not alien to modern ideas, but wedged into an uncompromising framework of conservatism.

Pros and cons of style

Modern strict and concise. It can be safely opposed to a sweet and rustic Provence or excessively chaotic eclecticism. This direction is not suitable for those who love lively, showy interiors. Modern, like minimalism, will be a real chance to “correct the situation” for small spaces, where every meter is worth its weight in gold. Due to the gloss of surfaces, a small amount of furniture, complex, but beautiful geometry, a small kitchenette will seem more. Although the closest "relative" of modernity in the stylistic "family" is considered a classic, this trend is devoid of pretentiousness and pretentiousness. Here the designer can safely use not only expensive wenge or luxurious eben, but also plastic, glass, steel. You can create as an expensive interior for luxury apartments, as well as a budget option for more modest studios. However, it is worth remembering that modern will not tolerate cheap imitations, quality for style is above all. The direction is devoid of strict framework. This is one of the main advantages. Based on the general rules, you can create the author's content of the kitchen, which will not be like any other. It should not be forgotten that you will have to select special furnishings, the configuration of which should stand out against the background of typical interior details. Modern appliances perfectly fit modern kitchens. This is another advantage, because in many classical areas, the benefits of technological progress have to be skillfully masked so as not to spoil the authentic atmosphere.

Another practical advantage can be considered a small amount of textiles, which quickly absorbs kitchen odors. Owners do not have to constantly wash large quantities of fabric decoration, which will allow you to free up more time for yourself.

The color range of modernity

In the design of modern kitchen, designers, as a rule, resort to conservative color combinations, that is, the atmosphere is “warm”. But the direction is open to experimentation. The background is traditionally performed in light pastel shades: white, gray, ashen, blue, beige, and peach. The furniture usually has contrasting facades of brown tones: from dark wenge to soft walnut color. In spacious kitchens, you can use a black headset or a combined version, where the upper part is made in light and the lower part in dark shades. In bold design experiments, olive, coral, violet, blue, cherry, and even lime or yellow are added to the decor. As a rule, these shades are made glossy facades of the kitchen. "Acid" colors began to be used relatively recently. We can say that they are characteristic of the modern version of modernity, since it used to be dominated by natural shades, the use of which was inspired by the surrounding nature.

Lighting

In moderns try to let as much natural light as possible into the room. In the sun, glossy surfaces will be a brilliant addition to the kitchen. The windows are usually closed with roller blinds, which allow you to adjust the intensity of the lighting. On the ceiling have a central chandelier of a simple configuration. If the kitchen is supplemented with a dining area, then it is replaced with a group of three or four small lamps that are located above the table. For classic modern is not characterized by the abuse of decorative lighting. In modern versions, the beauty of the interior is emphasized by light bulbs placed near the ceiling around the perimeter of the room or above the suite. The working surface must be complemented with spotlights, which in parallel fulfill the role of decorative lighting.

Materials and methods of finishing

The walls are plastered with monophonic vinyl wallpaper, covered with moisture-resistant plaster or ceramic tiles. The latter option is preferable, since the material has high strength and will last more than one year. In more sophisticated interiors, the use of artificial or natural stone is permissible. Ceramic, linoleum or laminate flooring is used for the floor. The latter option, though it looks beautiful, but will not last long. A stylish solution will be the use of self-leveling floor, which combines strength and aesthetic appeal due to the gloss of the surface. Ceiling plaster, paint or choose tensioning fabric. It does not make accents, so choose the classic white color. The apron is trimmed with ceramic tiles, and here you can even use a surface with a thin, light pattern of intersecting smooth lines that resemble the interlacing of tree branches or flower stems.

In the modern version of modernity, it is allowed to use ceilings of complex configuration, where a frame lined with moisture-resistant gypsum board is used. This technique is necessary for the zoning of the kitchen or dining area in the combined versions.

Choice of furniture

Furniture in modern style itself will become an accent and decor in one bottle. It should be selected with special care, focusing on three main nuances:

  • Functionality;
  • The form;
  • Material.

Furniture should be comfortable. Beauty to the detriment of comfort is not about modernity. Forms choose unusual, creative, where there is a combination of smooth lines and sharp corners. In materials, preference is given to either natural or high-quality imitations.

Kitchen set

The kitchen set should have smooth, glossy surfaces. There is no problem with the refrigerator in this respect, but the rest of the furniture is specially coated with varnish, acrylic, film or enamel. In small kitchens, headsets have an angular or parallel layout. In spacious versions use island location. For classic modern it is typical to use natural wood in furniture. The modern variation of style prefers cheaper plastic. It has an obvious advantage: a large assortment of shades that wood does not possess, sandwiched within the framework of the brown gradation. Also for the kitchen in the modern style is characterized by the use of the storage system of the combined type. In this case, half the boxes are hidden behind the doors, and the other part of them remains open. They are usually placed scanty interior decor.

Lunch group

For decoration of the dining area adjacent to the kitchen, the best option is the bar counter. In the island and peninsular layout, it also has a cooking surface (one of the sides of the working triangle). High metal chairs complement the furniture set. The table top can be made of high-quality plastic, glass or stone (natural or imitation). If you still prefer the usual table, then its shape should be out of the usual framework. Choose round, semicircular or square variants, but with smooth corners.

The bar counter is the perfect solution for a studio apartment zoning, where the kitchen flows into the living room.

Textiles, decor and accessories

As mentioned above, modern textiles use little. Curtains choose two to three colors lighter than the color of the walls. They are supplemented with translucent, weightless tulle, which by day allows maximum light into the room. In modern versions using Roman, roller or Japanese panel curtains. Decorative filling is very ascetic. It is enough to hang a clock or a mirror on the wall, a home photo gallery at the entrance or a pair of sconces. Simple vases, delivery plates, indoor plants, containers with fresh fruits or pots of spices are put on the shelves. Tools for work (scoops, spoons, paddles, beaters) can be hung in a row on a special metal handle that decorates a kitchen apron.

Conclusion

Modern is a universal trend. It can be implemented in any room of the apartment: bedroom, living room, bathroom, hallway. Perhaps the only exception will be the nursery, where a strict interior will seem too out of place. There are two versions of modern: classical and modern. The first is to the predecessor styles, and the second is like a refined high tech. Both design options are popular.
