Roses in landscape design: types and options of decoration

The rose is the most emblematic participant in the flower bouquet and a magnificent garden decoration at the dacha. In the flower garden, she unconditionally becomes the dominant queen, who ruthlessly suppresses her neighbors, no matter how beautiful they are. The history of plant cultivation begins in ancient Persia more than 5,000 years ago. In those days, this country was called Gulustan, which translated from Persian means “garden of roses”. Muslims consider this flower almost sacred, since according to legends it grew up at the place where the prophet Mohammed wept before ascension to heaven. Surprisingly, wherever the rose was cultivated, it was treated with special trepidation and honor. The written sources of Babylon, Greece, Rome, India, China preserved the mention of the beautiful queen of flowers, which was grown in the best gardens. Romantic legends always shrouded her. For example, according to the ancient Greeks, red roses emerged from the blood of Aphrodite, who was wounded by thorns during her desperate wanderings in Python's grove after the death of her beloved.

The essential oil of the plant is still part of almost all types of women's perfumes and is found in every second perfume for men. From its petals, sugary jam is cooked, which in the Ottoman Empire was called “gulbeshesheker”. It is mentioned as the nickname of the main character, in the book of the Turkish classic Reshad Nuri Günthekin, which tells about the wanderings of the beautiful Feride. In any culture, the rose is associated with incredible beauty and tenderness. Regardless of how many new varieties managed to bring breeders, classic red, white, yellow and pink roses are still the most popular. If you want to decorate your garden, plant royal bushes in it. Roses in landscape design occupy one of the leading positions as a central decorative element. Let's talk about which varieties should be chosen for a particular garden and how to please the naughty queen of flowers.

Variety and variety of roses

Roses differ in color, size of buds, leaf shape and height of bushes. Together with hybrids, the number of their varieties has more than 3000. In landscape design, there is a single classification, according to which plants are divided into three large groups:

  • Evergreen shrub. They are characterized by rapid growth and a long flowering period. The evergreen shrubs include Bourbon, polyantha, tea-hybrid, Bengal, tea and noiset roses.
  • With leaves falling before winter. These include white, damask, centifole and french roses.
  • Gotetytistye (tatting). Curly roses of this group have very poetic names: Ave Maria, Gloria Deya, Orange Elf, Concerto, Virgo.

An important characteristic for the queen of flowers is her terry, that is, the ability to increase the number of petals in one bud, in comparison with the wild-growing analogue. Based on this property, three types of plants are distinguished:

  • Simple.
  • Semi-double.
  • Terry.

The latter in one bud may have more than 150 petals. Flowers are also classified according to another characteristic - the height of the bushes:

  • Curb.
  • Sredneroslye.
  • Tall.
  • Ground cover In this group combining and undersized varieties.

Roses differ in color. The color of the bud is probably the most important feature, which, when choosing, is based first of all. In addition to the four colors listed above, roses can be maroon, brown, orange, purple, purple, fuchsia. There are several dozen special varieties in which the petals have an unusual color from a combination of two shades and their midtones. Of great importance in landscape design are hybrids. Artificially bred by crossing varieties make a variety of garden areas, due to its unusual shape, special terry or extraordinary color.

Hybrids are classified into the following groups, combining several dozen types:

  • Roses Floribunda. The group arose after crossing the tea and polyanthous varieties. It includes miniature border roses and bushes, reaching a height of more than 1 meter. Floribunda is characterized by “bouquet” flowering, that is, its semi-double buds form puffy brushes.
  • Hybrid tea. They are characterized by increased immunity to disease, but are extremely sensitive to frost, so the bushes are grown only in the south. This class includes all varieties that were derived from tea rose. Their color palette begins with yellow and ends with a soft orange.
  • Rugoz hybrids. They were obtained after breeding experiments with wrinkled rosehip. The main advantage of the variety is its frost resistance. Rugoz hybrids are unpretentious in care, vary in the degree of terry and most often become the center of park compositions. It is not necessary to cover the plants for the winter.
  • Grandiflora hybrids. The plants are erect, visually reminiscent of a tea variety, but with abundant bouquet blooms, like those of Floribunda. Varieties are not afraid of frost and bloom for a long time.

  • Polyanthic They were the result of the crossing of Chinese and multi-flowered roses. Bushes have small buds, collected in the "brush". They bloom for a very long time up to the first frost, which, by the way, is not afraid either. Because of their diminutiveness, polyanthus roses often decorate window sills in a house where they are grown in pots.
  • Scrubs. A special group, which includes braiding and undersized varieties.
  • Miniature. Remotely resemble polyanthaceae, but their height does not exceed half a meter. Grown both in open field and in pots. Long bloom until the first frost.
  • Climbing. They are unofficially called "queens" of landscape design. Bushes differ impressive height, because of what they need artificial supports. Easily get the desired shape after shearing, unpretentious in the care. May have simple buds and terry.
  • Patio. They are similar to miniature ones, as they are weak in growth, but their tiny buds are gathered in fluffy bouquets. Often used to create design compositions on the landscape of private plots. Look great in single lawns, curb flower beds along the edges of garden paths and in separate hanging pots, pots on the street.

As can be seen from the classification, the queen of flowers can have many guises and each variety has its own characteristics. Lovers to cope with the capricious "lady" in the garden will be quite difficult, but floriculture amenable to persistent.

Thanks to the rich "assortment" of roses, they can be chosen for both the mild southern climate and the harsh winters of Siberia, and the lush flowering garden will be the pride of the owners and the envy of their neighbors.

Choosing a landing site

Immediately before buying, it is necessary to determine the agrotechnical characteristics of the bush, its size and height, flowering features, double-colored nature and the shape of the buds, and also pick up the neighbors' queen who will fill the voids in the rosary. Among the abundance of varieties, it is recommended to choose those that were obtained by domestic or Dutch breeders. Seedlings should have a well-developed root system and be grafted at the time of purchase. The place should be sunny, like any queen, a rose loves to bask in the glory for universal admiration. Only some varieties are easily adapted in the penumbra. If the plant lacks the sun, the capricious queen will wither and gradually fade altogether.

Rose does not like high humidity. In the place of its planting, the groundwater should lie as deep as possible, therefore it is preferable to choose elevations for the rosary. The soil is suitable weakly acid or neutral. If the land on the plot does not meet this requirement, then the situation will save imported soil. The queen's root system needs a quality drainage system that will save her during rainy periods. Saplings are driven into open ground only in late spring or early summer, when the soil warms up well.

The rose, which appeared in the East, requires a rising sun. Surprisingly, this need arose not because of reverent attachment to the historic homeland. The reason is much more prosaic: roses are covered with dew in the morning. By lunchtime, its petals and leaves should dry the rising sun, as humidity will cause fungal diseases.

Care

Roses need to be fed in a timely manner, to which the queens will respond with gratitude in the form of lush flowering. The procedure is performed in the spring during the period of bud formation and in the summer during the blooming of the buds. In the fall, fertilizing is not needed, as it will provoke the growth of new shoots before frost, which is undesirable. At least once a week the bushes are watered. If the summer was particularly dry, then the frequency of the procedure should be at least doubled. Watering is carried out in the early morning or late evening, so that in the heated soil the roots of a rose are not “boiled” alive in boiling water. Soil loosening should also be carried out in a timely manner. The root system necessarily requires access to oxygen, which closes tightly rammed soil. It is possible to mulch the soil, which will prevent the growth of weeds around the rose garden. Some varieties need to cover for the winter. In the spring, diseased shoots are pruned to make it easier for the plant to drive out sturdy sprouts, and it does not expend juices on the weak. Three times in a season, flowers are sprayed with special formulations for pests and diseases.

Options for decorating the site with roses

Due to the variety of types of roses, it can be used in completely different landscape compositions. Wove varieties are perfect for vertical plantations and hedges. Curbing hybrids will look good in the same type of flower beds. Floribunda and Grandiflora roses are suitable for solo compositions.

Bushy, high hybrids organically blend into the mixborder composition. A flower bed consisting only of the queen of flowers is called the rosary. They are divided into types:

  • The parade. Includes varieties having a contrasting color.
  • Vertical. In them the framework in the form of an arbor or pergolas for climbing grades is used.
  • Romantic. Planted near recreation areas: at the patio, gazebos, terraces.
  • Visible from one side. Suitable for decoration of the inside of the fence or near the wall of the building.
  • Visible on both sides. Ideal for decoration of lawns and central areas in the garden.
  • Mobile. Roses are planted in portable pots and, if necessary, they can easily change their familiar place to a new one.
  • Rock gardens. Undersized varieties decorate compositions of boulders and stones.

About what kind of garden beauty you can create from roses and how to do it correctly, and let's talk further.

Vertical rose garden

To create a vertical rose garden, you need a frame. In its role may be the roof of the building or artificial supports with transverse crossbars. Climbing roses are planted with a small indentation from each other, as the selfish plant will not tolerate competition even from relatives. Vertical rose gardens look good in which royal bushes alternate with clematis. It is necessary to combine plants according to the color of the buds. If you need a contrasting flower bed, then white or blue flowers of clematis will emphasize the scarlet roses. To create a similar, delicate compositions suitable combination of pink and yellow buds.

Hedges and arches

A hedge of roses can zone the area, cover up the unsightly fence, decorate the facade of the house or isolate a place for solitude and rest. To create a royal "fence" suitable bushy and wicker varieties. The latter will have to be equipped with well-camouflaged supports. Arches of roses emphasize the transition from one zone to another. They symbolically mark the "entrance" to a special area: a garden, a place to rest, a secluded corner with a pond and benches. The arch can be bought in a ready-made form or made by yourself from thin rails and durable boards for supports. For decorating the frame fit only climbing varieties. Not bad look such passages in the hedge or in the tapeworm. Roses are planted in autumn or spring. The first option is suitable for varieties vaccinated in a particular region. In the spring, brought in seedlings. The summer period is enough for them to adapt to the peculiarities of the climate in benign conditions. For fences, varieties of roses from the group of hybrids of Rugoz are considered optimal.

Flower beds and rabatki

Flowerbeds - flower beds of the correct form, having sides. They can be planted roses of the same variety or combined compositions. There are many variants of combination schemes. Rabatki - elongated flower beds, which usually land along the garden paths. Their minimum width is one and a half meters. Plants in them are planted in rows from one to three bushes. Roses in rabatki, as a rule, are combined with sage, petunia, godetie, daylilies and crocuses. When choosing a variety pay attention to its thorniness. If the thorns of the rose will cling to the feet of people walking along the path, the discount itself should be slightly moved and transplanted. Optimal for flower beds of this type are low scrubs.

If the garden plot is too small to fit the flower magnificence in the form of flower beds, you can go for a little trick and plant standard roses. They are small trees, not traditional bushes, whose crowns adorn the buds.

Curbs and parterre

Curbs, repeating the outlines of garden paths, look nice and neat. Rose is a frequent guest in this kind of flower garden. Curbs are classified according to height in three types:

  • High.
  • Average.
  • Low.

For the formation of the latter used miniature roses and patios. Floribunds and polyanth varieties are suitable for high. For medium borders choose small shrubs (40-60 cm). The parterre is a flower bed in front of the facade of the house, the main “living” decoration of the exterior. It uses the most bizarre combinations of flowerbeds. Carpet flower beds of roses that form patterns or geometric shapes will look impressive. Single bushes of tea hybrids in combination with small architectural forms are suitable for the English style in landscape design.

Plot design with Austin roses

Austin roses are considered the height of elegance among the royal flowers. They are treated with special trepidation in England, where the gardens of the estates are literally buried in these colors. The rose of Austin is universal, it can become part of a mixborder, grow solo in a separate place, be part of a flower bed or a tapeworm. Bushes are neat, spherical shape. With a regular haircut, the rose does not grow upwards and sprouts that are almost woven along the ground.

Solo rose

Solo roses definitely attract attention. For flower beds of this type, only majestic flowers are chosen, which can even in small quantities become the main decoration of the landscape. Solo roses are suitable for small areas where there is not enough space for large lawns. To the bush looked advantageous, it is desirable to plant it on the open area, which is clearly visible. Miniature varieties and scars poorly cope with this role. For a solo composition, it is recommended to choose medium-height shrubs that will rise at least 50-60 cm above a level lawn.

Mixborder - with what to combine roses

Mixborders are a flower potpourri, which is squeezed into the framework of a flower bed. The neighborhood only tea hybrids, so they are better planted in shtambah or solo. The remaining groups of varieties can get along with other plants, if the latter is correctly chosen. For clarity, we give a simple example. Rose nature endowed with longevity. Some wild rose bushes live more than 5 centuries. The age of cultivated roses, of course, is not so impressive: only 25-30 years old with proper care. If the queen has “bad” neighbors with whom she cannot find a “common language”, her life span can be reduced to 5-10 years. Between the bushes in mixborder recommend planting crocuses, snowdrops, muscaria. The last of the bulbous family will decorate a flower garden in spring, while roses will only gain momentum. They are also combined with privet shrubs, lilacs, acacia, sea buckthorn, hasta and hvoynikami. Among the evergreens are the cotoneaster, magnolias and pyracantha. Good neighbors among conifers include thuja, spruce, juniper.

Rose and landscape design styles

The Queen of Flowers is universal and suitable for almost all areas of landscape design. It is organically combined with strict English, variegated Moorish and exotic colonial style. Rose bushes are combined with sculptural compositions in a romantic provenance and ethnic French direction. Terraces and clubs in the Spanish and Mediterranean style, too, can not do without the wonderful aroma of roses. Philosophical Japanese direction with open arms will take the queen of flowers in his garden of solitude. Грубоватый кантри и лаконичный в своей простоте русский стиль тоже не обходятся без слегка запущенных розовых кустов.

Conclusion

Капризная восточная гостья знает себе цену, поэтому за ее красоту придется расплачиваться регулярным уходом и трепетным отношением к кустам. Most varieties of roses react sharply to the slightest climatic changes, so a novice flower grower will have to stock up on a shelf of specialized literature in which the reasons for the unusual “behavior” of the plant will be described in accessible language. In gardening the queen of flowers really ranks first. Its privileged position is well deserved, since such delicate, sensual beauty combined with the wonderful aroma and tenderness of the petals cannot be found in other plants. The rose will demand adoration and admiration, and in gratitude for the reverent attitude, it will surely please with luxurious buds that will become bright spots on the landscape picture of your plot.
