Desks in the interior: tips on choosing

The history of desks rooted in ancient times. Initially, they were made of stone and were a primitive structure with a horizontal surface (table top) and boulders that served as legs. Of course, they did not write at such “tables” at that time, but were engaged in manual labor. The first models vaguely resembling modern counterparts appeared in ancient Egypt. They were made of wood and studded with metal. The Egyptian poor people dined right on the floor, and only wealthy people could afford such luxury as a table. Depending on the functional purpose, they were classified into two types:

  • Dining Such tables were round, had static legs and contained no more than a couple of people.
  • Workers. The first prototype of the desks had folding legs so that, if necessary, the tabletop could be placed directly on the knees.

In ancient Greece, the Hellenes squatted and worked with solid substrates when working with papyrus. After the libraries began to open, and I had to write all the time, the idea of the tables was adopted from the Egyptians. The Greeks made more elegant models with numerous decorations. According to one of the legends, the first desk turned out to be from a simple stool, which was decorated with such intricate carving that it became uncomfortable to sit on it. In addition to wood, used marble and metals for the manufacture of such furniture. With the development of joinery at the beginning of the Renaissance, the models began to be made of solid wood of rare species, inlaid with precious stones and decorated with carvings. The priests, who in those days were engaged in writing massive treatises and compiling new books, until the beginning of the XVII century, spent time standing behind the desks - high tables with an inclined table top. This style of work has not retained its relevance, but is still considered the most "healthy" for the eyes and spine. Desktops began to combine with bookshelves and bureau and secretaries appeared, which even nowadays still meet in the classic design. Now writing desks have become much more complicated in construction, which makes them multifunctional in the interior. About how to choose this important detail of the office or children's room, and we'll talk further.

Varieties of desks

After the start of mass production of furniture, bulky tables became lighter and got rid of unnecessary parts. If it was intended to work with writing materials, then the model must have an additional board under the slope, which was placed above the main worktop. In modern variations of school or student desks, the angle of inclination is preserved, allowing to develop the correct posture. With the advent of computers, writing furniture has changed. In its design added special niches for the monitor, system unit and sliding shelf under the keyboard. Classify the range of desks on several criteria:

  • The form;
  • Proposed placement;
  • The material of manufacture.

Also, models differ in configuration, that is, a set of additional elements: shelves, niches, superstructures, special holders and boxes. Multifunctional desks look more like full-fledged racks with an additionally installed table top. Their purchase will eliminate the need to install storage systems.

How to choose

When choosing a desk, you need to be guided by the needs of the one who will use it. If you plan to perform large-scale work (drawing, drawing), then you need to pay attention to the spacious model with wide countertops. If you need to organize the storage of working accessories, which are available in large quantities, then the emphasis is on numerous drawers and shelves. Also take into account the peculiarities of the interior of the room in which to put the furniture. Desks decorate with themselves not only classrooms, but also children's, workshops, home offices in the apartment.

Depending on the installation location

The type of installation desks are classified into the following types:

  • Angular. The design of the table involves placing at the junction of two walls and does not take up much space. The option is optimal for cramped rooms of city apartments. Since windows are usually located far away, you need to take care of high-quality local lighting. Also, this model is relevant for combined rooms, where little space is allocated to the working area (living rooms, bedrooms).
  • Hidden. This primitive version has retained in its design only the tabletop and in some cases, folding legs. Hidden tables are equipped with a special mechanism that, when activated, allows you to fix the work surface horizontally. In the normal state, it is masked with other furniture and saves space.
  • Built in sill. These long tables are located right under the windows, which guarantees an abundance of natural light during work during the day.
  • Rectangular. The table can be located in any part of the room. It looks solid, and for large sizes it can fit a computer, extra shelves, organizers and paper trays. If you organize a spacious study in the attic, then a massive classic table will become an ornament to a strict but stylish interior.

Also, there are non-standard models that are made to order and tailored to the characteristics of the room and its unusual geometry.

Optimal size

Regardless of the purpose for which this piece of furniture is purchased, desks must meet generally accepted standards. They will ensure the correct positioning of the arms, posture, the necessary distance to the paper or monitor for the eyes. From how a person works at the table, his health condition directly depends. It is especially important to choose the right size for schoolchildren and young children who are just learning to develop fine motor skills for coloring and modeling. Observe the following requirements:

  • The length of the working area should not be less than 1 m.
  • On the table top should be free space for hands.
  • The depth of the table should not be less than 0.5-0.6 m.

As for the height, it is selected individually, depending on the height of the person or child. To do this, sit on a chair and measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the sternum, where the last ribs are located. If the baby needs an option “for growth”, then you can purchase an original designer table with legs, the height of which is adjustable.

There is a system created by the architect Le Karbyuz. From his calculations it follows that for a person with a standard height (about 175 cm) the “ideal” table should have a height of 70-80 cm. The exact values from this range are determined when measuring the lower and upper torso, since their “ratio” depends on features of the figure.

In form

The shape of the standard tables are divided into two types:

  • Corner;
  • Rectangular.

The modern market offers a wide range of models of complex shapes with smooth lines, straight and rounded corners and additional working areas.

Functionality and equipment

In the traditional models there is a storage system at the legs on the right side, consisting of drawers. If there are a lot of accessories, these shelves are duplicated on the left. When the central location of the table is not supposed (in the middle of the room), superstructures are installed above the table top - additional open and closed shelves for books, notebooks, textbooks and decorative elements that will dilute the interior composition in a strict study. The models having an additional sliding table top are very popular. The element significantly increases the working area and is in demand in home workshops.

Choosing a table based on age

Depending on age features, tables are classified into three types:

  • Baby;
  • Teenage;
  • For adults.

All three types differ in size tops, depth and of course height. It is necessary to select models individually for a specific person. Also it is necessary to take into account the design of furniture. For example, for girls it can have a bright pink color and decorations in the form of flower appliqués. For boys fit models of blue, blue, gray shades. Teenagers choose modern designer tables, with a lot of technical "frills".

It is welcomed if the table for a child or teenager has an adjustable tabletop, which is given the desired angle of inclination. While the baby’s body is growing, it is important to instill the habit of working in the right position.

Materials for production

Depending on the material manufacturing desks are divided into the following types:

  • From MDF. Boards are made by pressing wood waste (mainly sawdust) with the addition of special adhesives.
  • DSP. The material is similar to MDF, but has a shorter wear period.
  • Solid wood. The most expensive, luxurious desks are made from it. They are bulky and have a lot of weight, but they will last more than a dozen years. Such models organically flow into the classical style and its modern “interpretation” - modern.
  • Metal. This material is used in combination with wood or glass. Tables with metal inserts are usually custom-made and selected for a specific interior.
  • Glass. Only countertops are made of it. We use tempered glass or triplex, which are highly durable. These tables are suitable for high-tech, minimalism and loft.

Plastic is considered the cheapest and most impractical material. Strong loads are contraindicated in such a table, so it will not last long.

Desk for two jobs

If the family has two children, then their room is equipped with ergonomic furniture that will leave a lot of space for active games. A table for two workplaces is practically the same as usual, just its tabletop is long, and all add-ons and storage systems are duplicated symmetrically. In some models, conditional zoning of work sites is carried out at the expense of the lower boxes. As an option, you can install a through shelving that will allow each child to quietly go about their business and not interfere with each other.

Multifunction models

If you "dig" deeper, it turns out that all modern models of desks are multifunctional. Initially, this element was invented only for writing, and the presence of storage systems was not intended. They appeared much later, already as a result of the bold ideas of designers who were striving to create maximum comfort for a person. Original models may contain a chair in a complex structure or “mask” under the facade of the cabinet. When opening its lower doors, a storage system and a niche for the legs appear, and the upper part turns into a tabletop.

Conclusion

Although the century of technological progress inexorably outlives the traditional handwriting, replacing it with a set of machine text on the keyboard, it is still too early to forget the desktops. You can buy them in ready-made form in furniture stores or make your own hands. The second option allows you to equip the ideal workplace. For Provence, the old "grandmother's" table, which can be slightly ennobled, is suitable. With modern style, high-tech and minimalism combined models of glass and metal. The avant-garde will gladly take on an unusual desk with an abstract shape and a decorative lighting system. The classic style is combined with bulky models made of solid wood and coated with varnish. To any direction you can pick up a unique desk that will decorate the furniture set and an accent in the interior.
