Making a house or apartment in a grunge design, we create a cozy nest, where we will relax from the everyday fuss. Style combines old and new, so fans of the fashion trend are found among people of different ages.

History of

Style originated in the XIX century in France. It began with the French aristocracy, who, tired of city life, loved to spend time in the villages. Classicism with its luxury, pompousness was poorly suited for arranging village estates, so less expensive materials were used in home improvement, which were more suitable for country life, but the interior decoration looked elegant.

The aristocratic style harmoniously coexisted with the rustic. Or the French bourgeois brought from the village to their town houses some lovely things - figurines, lamps, beautiful vases. These items successfully complemented the classic interior, added a certain zest to it, added a bit of nostalgia for rural life.

Such an interior was designed to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, so that at home it would be nice to get together with the whole family, hold conversations, and rest from the city’s rhythm of life.

This is how the grunge appeared, which combines elitism and provincialism, elegance and accessibility. Let us consider in more detail what constitutes a style in the design of a room.

Style in the interior

For more than two hundred years of existence, grunge has become quite popular. Many people want to arrange an apartment in this spirit. The grunge in the interior of the house is primarily a classic, but not frilly and expensive, but more restrained and accessible.

There is no place for gold, stucco. Replaced by forged items. This style is comfortable and concise. He aims to create a cozy, practical interior for many years. Dark rooms with low ceilings are not suitable for grunge. He needs spacious, bright rooms with high ceilings.

Please note that there are no extra items. Preference is given only to functional furniture and decorative items.

Forged parts are another distinguishing feature of grunge. Forging should not shine. It should be the imprint of time. Grunge allows the use of carpets. Usually they are soft, natural colors, which gives even more comfort.

The style is good because you can change the interior around with your own hands, adding or removing certain details. For example, laying out small decorative pillows from linen, cotton, and satin in calm tones on the sofa, and hanging on the walls portraits of family members — such a detail is also characteristic of grunge.

Materials

The materials used in creating the interior are natural. When finishing the premises they prefer stone, wood, brick, and often they are not even treated, striving for even greater naturalness.

The decoration is dominated by fabrics such as flax, cotton, silk, wool, leather. Cotton produces excellent light curtains on the windows, and upholstered furniture is covered with woolen blankets. Natural materials are designed to emphasize unity with nature. Often they are artificially aged. Metal parts are also characteristic of grunge. Forged decorative elements are widespread - frames for portraits or mirrors, furniture legs, lattices.

Wooden beams of different sizes, bamboo decorative panels, textiles are used in the design of the walls. Often in the interior you can see the walls, which are brick masonry, not reaching the ceiling, but breaking off in the middle with uneven waves. At the same time the raw brick is applied, or just do not touch already existing laying. Also the walls are covered with pebbles.

The floor can be stone or wood. When it is laid out, wooden beams are not always used. Parquet, laminate look no less harmoniously in a similar interior.

Furniture and decor

To replace the elegant situation come simpler counterparts. Oak furniture replaces teak furniture. This tree is as durable as an oak, but less expensive. When choosing preference is given to light tones. The contours of the furniture should be smooth.

Popular wicker sofas. They look simple, but beautiful. It is noteworthy that large bulky cabinets are not typical. Instead, they choose light wooden or metal racks, low tables, and pedestals. But as a frame for a mirror, on the contrary, massive wooden frames are often covered with soft bronze or gilt, which give the look of antiquity.

The presence of decorative elements should be concise and justified, since the style itself is already quite interesting, implies the presence of many features designed to decorate the space, such as uneven brick masonry, rough wood in the wall and ceiling cladding, wicker furniture and so on. As a beautiful, and most importantly, a functional element of the decor can be a forged or wooden lamp.

Lighting and colors

A distinctive feature of grunge are large spaces with an abundance of daylight, which should prevail over artificial. The windows are usually large with simple single-layer curtains so that nothing prevents the penetration of daylight. Chandeliers, floor lamps, wall lamps, lamps are not rarely framed with gold or bronze, since aristocracy is still inherent in style.

It is important that gilding and bronze be dull or artificially aged, but not shiny and defiantly luxurious.

The color palette is designed to create a sense of calm, to have creativity. Sharp contrast is not allowed, so the colors are usually low-key. The basic color palette of the style includes all shades of white, beige, brown, black, gray. To place accents are used gold, silver, copper colors, but they must be muted.

Style features

To summarize, we identify the main distinguishing features of grunge in the interior:

  • the use of natural materials such as stone, wood, brick;
  • soft colors - gray, white, brown, dark blue, beige, black;
  • rejection of luxury for practicality and functionality;
  • the absence of deliberate negligence, the interior looks simple but elegant;
  • artificially aged objects or authentic old-fashioned, but inexpensive items;
  • furniture, decor items have smooth outlines;
  • plenty of free space and daylight.

Using all of the above techniques for decorating rooms in grunge style, you will be able to create a cozy living space, where it will be nice to return after a hard day’s work. Natural materials will ensure the durability of the finish, and the peculiar flexibility of the style allows you to complement the interior of the house with new details or remove old ones, while maintaining the overall concept.

Most often this style is preferred by creative people or retro lovers, but this does not mean that the style is not suitable for practical city dwellers. The grunge style in the interior skillfully combines various elements, which is why it is chosen by people of different ages, wealth, attitudes and thanks to this, the grunge has been around for 200 years without losing relevance.
