This also applies to dressers - perhaps the most functional furniture. The dresser decor must be combined with the interior of the living room in which it is located. If you need to put the emphasis in a moderate pastel design, updated with a print and a vase topped with a vase will be a good solution. Another thing, if you need to create the perfect combination of color palette. Properly decorated old chest of drawers to cope with any task.

Buying new furniture is not a cheap pleasure. And the models sold in the post-Soviet space are not always original. Therefore, a master class on the upgrade of an old chest of drawers is useful to those who want to save, as well as people with an artistic mindset, who are to the original. So, how to decorate the chest with your own hands?

We update the old dresser

Whether it is the restoration of the dresser or the decor of the tables with their own hands - everything is done in stages. The first thing you need before starting work is tools. Here is a list of required:

  • small grinding machine;
  • sandpaper or abrasive sponge;
  • stencils;
  • putty knife;
  • unnecessary toothbrush;
  • screwdriver;
  • knife on wood;
  • several brushes, different in width and composition of the pile (hard and soft), sponges;
  • masking tape;
  • acetone;
  • industrial film;
  • toothpicks.

From materials needed:

  • bulk paste or acrylic based putty;
  • glue for wooden surfaces;
  • varnish for wood, stain or primer with paint of a certain color (for decoupage - three-layer napkins).

You will also need gloves and a respirator.

If this is an artistic idea, acrylic paint of the desired color will do. For those who want to modernize the old dresser a good option would be to replace the furniture fittings: you can add new handles or mirror panels.

Restoration

But for those who are not afraid of working with sandpaper, trowel and acrylic paint, a step-by-step restoration of the dresser has been prepared. The process consists of several steps: removing the old paint or varnish coating, thorough skinning, checking for chips and other irregularities, local filling of defects, painting and final decoration of the dresser.

But first it is worth looking for defects in the inside of the chest. All broken bottoms, shelves and guides should be unscrewed with a screwdriver and measured. In accordance with the geometric parameters, you can buy new items or make them yourself. If you are closer to the second option, be prepared to acquire an additional arsenal of tools and knowledge in the field of thorough repair of furniture. Do not forget to make such a check before decorating the chest with your own hands.

Also note the screws, knobs, and feet. If the fittings are not the same, with differences in shape and pattern, then most likely, these elements are made by hand, and if some of them are damaged, an analogous detail cannot be reached. In this case, it is better to replace all fittings.

Cleaning and preparation of the product

Cleaning the surface is done carefully so as not to damage the important decorative elements of the product. First, clean the surface by wiping it with soapy water. To remove dirt and dust from hard-to-reach places, use a toothbrush.

To free the surface of the furniture from paint or varnish, you will need an industrial film and acetone. Cover the last old chest of drawers, and to enhance the effect, cover the product with industrial film. In the absence of a film, you can use oilcloth, cellophane and other available materials. Limit the flow of air and leave the furniture for one hour. After this time, a layer of varnish and paint will lag behind the tree.

Dresser decor with their own hands begins with the work of construction spatula. Remove the loose layer from the tree without damaging the surface. Remember that you need to remove all the paint.

This is followed by a stage of skinning.

The surface, free from small elements of a decor, is ground by the machine. For the latter, it is important to choose the right nozzle. Emery paper or using a sanding sponge to process the area of protruding parts and small parts. Do not overdo it in the shoe, so as not to damage the chest of drawers.

Cracks, chips, scratches and other defects are carefully covered with wood putty. It is better to give preference to water-based putty. For restoration, putty is matched by color, not wood name. It should only go into the grooves, so again sand the surface. If the traces remain in the tree structure, stains will appear when tinted with a stain, which cannot be removed. Replace the bottoms in the boxes, runners and strengthen the frame.

Painting

The choice of paint, its brand and color depends on how you see the future decor of the old dresser. This can be a stain of wood, if the structure of the tree is smoothly smoked and looks good without paint. Wood stain will be suitable for change of color with preservation of the texture of a tree. You can cover the entire surface with acrylic paint, and then the design of the old dresser will be completely different.

Both stain and paint are applied evenly with a brush or roller. Work on time is the same: only the results on the fact of drying are different.

Stages of work:

  • The choice of varnish, paint the desired color and other materials.
  • Toning, staining or painting with a brush, roller. You can rag.
  • A layer of varnish on the entire surface of the furniture. After drying - another layer or two. Can be replaced with transparent primer.
  • Sanding to take off the raised pile of the array.
  • Finishing layers of varnish.
  • Wait until completely dry.

Design solutions

The decor of the old nightstand or the decoration of the dresser with their own hands is determined by the style of the interior. You can use wallpaper, lace, choose a floral print, fabric upholstery, paint, or put names on the surface, memorable dates. You can decorate the entire front panel with coffee beans, buttons, beads, beads and other elements. If this is a living room, it is better to use presentable panels of restrained color, but for a bedroom or nursery, you are given complete freedom of choice. Decoupage technique, English style, volumetric decor, as well as antique decor do not go out of fashion.

Bedside tables are updated on the same principle. But how to decorate a plastic chest of drawers? The best choice would be decoupage. The same works as above are carried out, with the exception of grinding. For plastic there are special paints of different colors and primer.

Decoupage

How to decorate a chest of drawers using decoupage technique? This is real freedom for fantasy. Decoupage means decorating furniture using special cards and three-layer napkins. You also need to get white acrylic paint, white glue, scissors, roller and sponge. The process begins with a paint roller on the entire surface of the dresser. Next, start cutting out the desired images. To give an old look after complete drying, you should go through the product with emery paper. This should be done carefully, along the lines of wood.

Apply the PVA glue on all the parts to glue them to the dresser. Grease the front side of the pictures with the same glue, which will protect them from external influences. If it is flowers or ornate patterns, they can be extended with patterns of lines and curls protruding to the surface of the bedside table.

Decoupage can also be done with a cloth. This will decorate the facade to match the interior.

English style

But the design of the chest with their own hands is not limited to the idea of decoupage. For the English style is ideal old product, even if it is with noticeable defects. You will need four colors: white, red, blue and brown. The first three - acrylic paint, the last - oil. Of the materials also useful putty, trowel, topazury, masking tape, sandpaper, decorative nails, brushes and rollers.

Accessories are removed from the dresser and the product is cleaned. After the surface is covered with an uneven layer of putty: the more careless the better. Cover the chest of drawers with white paint and mark with adhesive tape areas for staining. Dissolve scarlet and blue paint. The spotting that may appear during the dyeing process is only a plus. The table top and sides are treated with sandpaper. The finished work is covered with toplaze (use a sponge for this). The perfect tone of toplase is "walnut". After hammer in the decorative furniture nails and install the accessories darkened with oil brown paint.

Antique

But how to decorate a chest of drawers with your own hands, if it is too old fashioned? Fans of country and Provence will appreciate the antique decor. Such a design is now popular, and the work will require the following:

  • sandpaper of various granularity and rigidity;
  • sponge;
  • brushes and screwdrivers;
  • craquelure varnish;
  • wax candle;
  • 2 colors of acrylic paint.

Remove accessories, drawers and chest of drawers. Treat the entire surface with sandpaper and wipe with a wet sponge. Apply the first coat of paint and leave to dry. The following attritions will be intentional, and they are carried out with sandpaper and a candle. After apply paint of another shade (to your taste) and wipe those areas that were covered with wax with a sponge: in these places the paint will be erased. The finish stage is the decoupage technique or the author's painting. Then everything is covered with craquelure.

Surround decor

Decor cabinets under the TV with their own hands, cupboard, cabinet or chest of drawers. This technique is applicable to any furniture and does not require large expenditures. You will need stencils that are easily cut out of cardboard. Still need masking tape, sponges, brushes, spatula, any acrylic paints (often used white and brown), bulk paste or putty on the basis of acrylic.

The dresser decor in this style begins with the removal of fittings and pulling out all the drawers. Stencils are mounted on the surface and covered with putty. Trim with a spatula and leave a bulk pattern to dry. You can make the furniture monophonic or highlight the created elements. If this is a selection, simply rub the convex parts with wax, by analogy with the previous method, and after coating with paint, erase it on wax sections. This is a good way to restore the old or give a special charm to the new dresser.
