How to make a wall of drywall do it yourself

Gypsum plasterboards can rightly be considered a universal building material for interior work. You can build a false fireplace from them, make arched openings, figured niches. But most often they are made of plasterboard walls and partitions. Such designs allow you to quickly and easily change the layout and conduct zoning of premises or at the same time align the walls and warm, isolate the room itself from noise. However, due to the considerable thickness of the material and the frame, if one needs to be installed, several “eat up” the free space. Therefore, it would be rational to decide to block the room with light plasterboard dividers or to finish all the walls only if there is a large area of the equipped room. And if this option suits you - we recommend immediately familiarize yourself with useful descriptions of the material itself and the features of its use. Recommendations and accurate instructions will help you to carry out the correct installation of the wall of the plasterboard with your own hands.

Features

It is possible to build a plasterboard wall on any object: in a regular apartment or a brick, stone house. Such constructions can be erected in wooden houses, but it must be remembered that the full decoration of the gypsum cardboard with wood (to maintain the overall style) will not be possible. Under the influence of heavy lumber drywall will begin to deform. Installation of the structure can be carried out both on the frame (from metal profiles or wooden slats) and frameless. Before delivering drywall to an object, you should take care of the organization of the place for its storage. You can put drywall on the side (long) side with a slight slope along the wall. You can also put it on the floor, after having built a small flooring of boards. Such a precaution will prevent any accidentally spilled liquid from falling on the plaster and getting it wet.

Advantages and disadvantages of plasterboard walls

Ease of installation is one of the important advantages of using drywall for leveling walls or building partitions. Even with the need to manufacture the frame work is carried out quickly and easily. Other advantages of using this material include:

  • full ecological sheets (due to the absence of harmful binders in the composition);
  • the possibility of finishing the erected walls with different materials;
  • strength of the finished structure;
  • accessibility by price range (even for special types of drywall);
  • ease of implementation of non-standard forms of partitions;
  • ease of processing material before use;
  • preservation of a normal microclimate in the room due to the high air flow capacity of the plaster layer.

The disadvantages of drywall walls (which were collected only from gypsum boards and profiles) include low sound insulation. Also with special attention you need to approach the storage sheets. They are very fragile and can be damaged due to inaccurate unloading or unsuccessful location in the equipped room. Another disadvantage is low resistance to stress. By drywall will not be able to nail the shelves or fix on it a weighty lamp with a glass canopy.

Types of drywall

To a rather pleasant advantage of drywall can be attributed to its diversity. The following types of sheets can be found on the modern building materials market:

  • ordinary (GCR): is a gypsum dough, enclosed between layers of thick cardboard; often used for the construction of partitions and leveling walls; not suitable for use in rooms with high humidity;
  • moisture resistant (GKLV): include additives that allow to increase its resistance to moisture and the appearance of fungus or mold; suitable for installation in the kitchen and in the bathroom;
  • fire resistant (GKLO): used for wall decoration (or erection of partitions) on objects with high fire risk; can be placed next to cooking stoves, stoves, fireplaces;
  • Water-resistant (GKLOV): a special type of drywall that is resistant to moisture and at the same time allows to increase the fire safety of the room.

Classify drywall and destination. For walls, wall material is used, whose thickness is more than 12.5 mm. For example, Knauf sheets can have a thickness of 12.5 to 24 mm.

Walls made from plasterboard using frame technology

The construction of plasterboard walls on the frame is the most common method of installation. This technology is applicable for erecting partitions from scratch and for leveling walls that have drops of more than 4 cm. The advantage of this method is the presence of a reliable base of profiles, in which you can not only hide the wiring, but also arrange insulation and sound insulation plates. It is universal and suitable for implementation in any spacious premises and when working with any types of drywall. An important advantage of the technology is the possibility of easy styling of the room due to the installation of niches or curly walls with lighting. Despite the use of numerous materials and tools, the construction of a gypsum wall frame is carried out without any particular difficulties. Below we have reviewed the detailed instructions that will allow you to install such a structure yourself.

Required materials and tools

To independently install the drywall on the wall, you will need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • sheets of drywall;
  • guide and carrier profiles;
  • perforator (for mounting profiles);
  • screwdriver (for fixing themselves GCR);
  • level;
  • metal shears (for cutting profiles);
  • construction knife (for cutting plasterboard sheets);
  • roulette;
  • suspensions under the bearing profile;
  • nylon thread (for convenience of marking the vertical plane on which the profiles will be aligned);
  • a building angle or ruler (for drawing cut-up areas on sheets of the gypsum board; however, this work can be carried out using the available profiles);
  • dowel (for fixing the frame);
  • drywall screws (special fasteners for sheets).

Additionally, you should prepare protective equipment (mask, glasses). It is worth remembering that cutting GCR - dusty work.

Frame construction

Properly assembled frame - a guarantee of reliability of the entire drywall. That is why the device bases for sheets should be carried out as accurately as possible. You can assemble the correct frame using the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. Mark on the floor and ceiling of guide profile locations. It is advisable to place them as close as possible to the wall to be sheathed (as far as its irregularities and projections allow) in order to minimize the area of the room to be built.
  2. Installation of guides using dowels.
  3. Introduction to the ceiling or floor guide carrier profiles. The distance between adjacent vertical profiles can be 40 cm (for the construction of a reinforced frame) or 60 cm (for mounting a conventional frame).
  4. Fasteners to the wall of suspensions at a distance of 50-60 cm between adjacent ones.
  5. Fixing the thread that defines the vertical plane along which the carrier profile will be aligned. It is advisable to fix this thread in 3-5 rows.
  6. The alignment of the supporting struts and their attachment to the suspensions.

Laying communications

If the usual wiring pipes (for example, in the bathroom) is simply sewn up with drywall, then wiring will require additional work. Laying of all wires is carried out in a corrugation. This will create secure wiring. Further, the locations of the electro points (switch, socket) are determined. Wires in a corrugation are brought to these sites. On the drywall itself for electrical points, you need to make holes using a special crown nozzle. To prevent the corrugation from hanging under drywall, it is necessary to fix it with hose clamps. Plastic clamps are usually attached to hangers.

Laying the wiring is necessary in such a way as to have a "stock" of wires, and not to have it tight. We also recommend that you make a wiring diagram so that in the future, if necessary, you can get easy access to the wires, rather than disassemble the entire wall.

Plasterboard installation

The simplest task when assembling a plasterboard wall or partition can be considered direct installation of sheets. But for proper device design, you need to make the right calculations and properly cut GCR. It must be remembered that the joints of the sheets should be in the center of the carrier profile. If in the process of counting it turns out that a drywall strip of about 10 cm or less in size is required, you need to reconsider the docking scheme and increase this piece to at least 20 cm.

Such a narrow strip will initially be a weak point of the structure and the probability of its shedding over time will be quite high. After preparing the sheets, they are fastened to the frame. If necessary, before installing the gypsum board, it should be laid between the individual elements of the noise insulation frame (for this task, special plates are ideal). In the process of installing drywall need to remember about the possible need for trimming sheets horizontally (with uneven ceiling or floor). Also try to embed the screws into the drywall so that they do not perform, but do not form deep "holes" on the sheets.

Rough finish - Seal joints and holes

The finishing of the plasterboard wall is carried out as follows:

  1. Putty caps rubbed caps screws and all the joints between sheets of drywall. For work it is recommended to use an ordinary spatula and to eliminate the appearance of bulk layers of putty.
  2. A strip of reinforcing mesh is laid over the sheet joints. It will align this area and will contribute to good adhesion of the wall with subsequent layers of rough finish.
  3. Conducted full putty wall.
  4. After hardening putty sanding surfaces to obtain a flat plane.
  5. The final stage of the rough finish will be the priming of the wall. The primer will ensure good adhesion of the finishing to the base. The application and distribution of the primer is carried out using a roller.

Alignment of the walls by gluing GCR

The frameless method of mounting the gypsum seems simple. But to get a quality result you need to do a lot of work. Gluing is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Complete removal of the old finish. It is especially important to remove the adhesive compositions, previously used under the tile or wallpaper.
  2. Degreasing the surface, which allows to exclude the presence of areas to which drywall will not stick.
  3. Priming of walls to ensure good adhesion of the adhesive composition on drywall to the cleaned wall.
  4. The direct gluing of gypsum boards should be carried out taking into account the peculiarities of the wall to which they will be attached.

When the difference on the wall is not more than 5 mm around the perimeter of the sheet, a gypsum putty is applied with a notched trowel. Also, two long strips of adhesive are applied at a distance of 40 cm from the edges.

When the drop from 5 mm to 2 cm, you need to use a thicker adhesive for drywall. It is applied with an ordinary trowel in the form of small piles around the perimeter and inside the perimeter at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other.

With differences from 2 to 4 cm, bands or squares of drywall are initially glued onto the wall - beacons. They are glued to gypsum plaster, creating a custom frame. In this case, the joints of the sheets should fall on the center of the lighthouse. Only after the putty has dried (it may take 2–3 days) the sheets are glued. The adhesive composition is pre-applied to the lighthouses.

Install lightweight partitions

Plasterboard partitions are mounted on the frame. It can be "single" (consist of only two guides) or "volumetric" (include a pair of parallel guides on the ceiling and the floor). The second type is more complex, but it allows you to get a reliable and durable partition. Work on the installation of the separator with a single frame is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Marking the location of guides on the floor and ceiling below the level.
  2. Installation of guides with dowels. Installation of a vertical rack, which will be the side edge of the finished partition.
  3. Installation of carrier profiles at a distance of 40 cm from each other. Their fixation to guides.
  4. Installation of horizontal profiles (preliminary in the places of "lining" horizontal profiles on vertical ones, trimming of these sections is carried out). Fixing horizontal profiles.
  5. Sheathing the assembled frame with plasterboard and the subsequent rough finish of the finished structure.

Methods of finishing walls from plasterboard

The original fine finish of drywall will help give the room a stylish look. The permissible wall cladding options for plasterboard include:

  • Painting: for dyeing, you can use the usual formulations or paints with cracking effect, pieces of fabric, glitter;
  • wallpapering: an affordable and easy way to finish;
  • decorative plaster coating: non-standard compositions will help to quickly transform the room;
  • tile wrapping: an optimal solution for a bathroom, but it is worth remembering that plasterboard walls are not able to withstand heavy loads, so it is better to place tile at the bottom and combine it with other types of finishes;
  • plastic clapboard finish: it is easy and simple to install the clapboard, in addition, it will help to reliably protect the drywall itself from moisture and mechanical damage;
  • wooden lining or board: an unsuitable option due to the significant weight of materials, however, such elements can be used to design (separate or decorate) walls.

Drywall Wall Design Examples

Options for styling a room by the construction of a plasterboard wall set. The most common style of styling is niche montage. It can be located around the head of the bed in the bedroom, or it can be a multi-level plasterboard rack. To organize such a construction, it will be necessary to increase the auxiliary levels. Additionally, it is recommended to equip each individual niche with backlighting. It looks very unusual design with the organization of the second arch level of drywall in the upper part of the wall. The space inside the niche can be painted or glued with photo wallpaper. A simple way to create an unusual design can be considered the selection of individual corners of such a wall using an artificial stone. On the drywall itself on top of painting, decorative plaster or wallpaper, you can fix a small plaster or foam decor. Effectively look collected from the foam moldings frame. Inside, you can glue wallpaper of other colors or with other patterns, to paint the walls.

Drywall Tips

The following tips and secrets from the masters will help you to avoid mistakes when working with drywall and easily build a wall or partition from this material:

  1. Free up enough space for cutting sheets. It is desirable to provide easy access to each side of the material. This will significantly save time preparing GCR.
  2. To minimize the finishing work on leveling the differences between adjacent sheets, initially choose materials with a straight edge (designation - PC).
  3. For finishing a large wall (for example, in the hall), be sure to invite an assistant. One person with high quality and fast to do a large amount of work simply will not work.
  4. For mounting sheets on a wall with a door or window, you need to come up with a special layout pattern for the gypsum board. The joints should be at least 20 cm away from the corners of the opening. If the joints and corners are close together, the likelihood of cracks appearing on the sheets will be extremely high.
  5. Unevenness of the finish, which may be visible upon completion of the work, can be hidden by wall decoration (painting or wallpapering with patterns). Also you will be helped by such an installation next to the floor lamp, in which the unevenness or defect will be in the shadow of the illuminator when it is turned on.

Conclusion

Using drywall for easy redevelopment of the room is a cost-effective and affordable solution. Inexpensive material is simple to prepare and direct installation. In addition, the variety of types of sheets allows you to find ideal options for arranging and ordinary living rooms, and bathrooms, and rooms with fireplaces, stoves. Installation of plasterboards can be both with the frame, and without it. But it is necessary to take into account the rationality of applying different methods. For rooms in which walls have significant irregularities or for which communications are needed, it is better to use the first method. If there are minimal defects on the wall and it is necessary to bring out only a few electropoints, the simple option would be to simply glue the GCR to the wall. Be sure to read the tips of the masters before work. Recommendations and secrets of experts will help to avoid various mistakes and get a really reliable and neat wall or partition from the gypsum board.
